The management of Budapest's Sziget Festival, one of Europe's biggest, plans to organise a sister festival on Croatia's Adriatic coast next year, Hungarian daily Nepszabadsag reported.
The five-day festival on Obudai Island in north Budapest has been going since 1993 and attracted 390,000 visitors to this year’s event (August 12-17) where live acts included Manic Street Preachers, The Offspring, Snow Patrol, Fatboy Slim, Buena Vista Social Club, Placebo, White Lies, Squarepusher, Lily Allen, Paul Oakenfold, Turbonegro, Klaxons, Editors, Tricky, Pendulum, Armin Van and many more.
The festival caters for many different tastes in music, offering a blues stage, a jazz tent and a world music stage alongside the main stage with more popular rock acts.
Profits estimated at EUR 555,000 from the Sziget alone and another EUR 555,000 from the organiser's other activities could finance expansion to new sites, owner and main organiser Karoly Gerendai said.
Cities easily accessible by motorway as well as public transport on the Adriatic coast are eyed for a sister event, to be launched next summer, he added.
Split and Zadar are among towns considered to host the festival.
