Holidaymakers to Croatia have been advised to buy Kunas online as it offers substantial savings.

According to foreign exchange company FairFX.com, customers can pay up to 14% more if they buy their currency at the airport rather than order it online.

Travellers hoping to stick to a budget during the forthcoming half-term holidays can make use of a prepaid card which work like a debit card and can be topped up on the internet or by text.

According to FairFX.com, the cards allow travellers to avoid the "confusing charges and misleading advertising" of bureaux de change, the most expensive of which are reportedly located at Luton, Birmingham and Stansted airports.

Stephen Heath, chief executive of the company, said: 'To avoid the worst rates on the market, which are generally found in airports and train stations, travellers need to get organised.

'As sterling continues to sink against the euro, exchange rates will continue to fluctuate, and as the pound is expected to be weak for some time to come it is more vital than ever that people take steps to get as much as they can.'

The pound fell to a six-month low against the euro this week.
