The island of Losinj is situated in the North Adriatic, in Kvarner Gulf. Along with the island of Cres and a few islets it forms the Losinj-Cres archipelago. Mali Losinj, with 7000 inhabitants, is the biggest settlement on the island.
The variety of flora and fauna and a mild climate make it one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Numerous historical monuments, ancient buildings and ruins are witness to its long history.
Apoxiomen, the ancient statue of a young athlete dating back to the 2nd century B.C. has been attracting the attention of domestic and international public ever since it was discovered underwater next to the islet of Vela Orjula not far from Mali Losinj. It was extracted from the sea and restored by experts from the Croatian Conservation Institute with support of experts from Florence.
